Study Design & Protocol Development

Many clients are technology experts or doctors, who’ve worked hard to develop their interventions or technology, but don’t feel confident designing a randomized controlled study. Some may have an observational study dataset, but not a clear vision of how best to approach the data. Others have clear study ideas, but want their strategy validated, or want to consider alternate approaches. We’re happy to build a study design from scratch for you, or to help you refine your approach. In the process, we can write or edit a study protocol and statistical analysis plan.

Sample Size/Power Calculations

Whether you’re doing a human randomized controlled trial or an observational study on retrospective data, you’ll need to balance study power with your use of resources, and potentially with subject risk. We can work with you on determining a sample size that finds an optimal balance of all your study parameters.

Data cleaning & analysis

After you conduct your trial, you may find yourself with messy data and a complex set of analysis plans that you may not wish to take on in-house, or that you’d like someone else’s help on for validation. We’re happy to take on that work, and to suggest any further ad hoc analyses that may contribute to your research goals.

Scientific Writing

Once the analysis is complete, most clients wish either to report the results to a governmental oversight body, or to publish them in an academic journal article. We’re happy to take the lead in writing up the results, or just to provide editing.

Some clients may envision more of a secondary data analysis approach, in which identification of primary studies and weaving them into a meta-analysis is the primary purpose of the project. We provide this support to clients as well.

Ad hoc / non-standard projects

We do most of our work with entities doing clinical or observational trials, or secondary data analysis. However, we are interested in most any project that relates to human health and well-being. We enjoy exploring new knowledge domains, and developing creative data analysis approaches. For example, we worked with a client to develop statistical models for ambulance response times to solve a city resource usage budget dispute.
